On the top of the mountains than surround Rio, there is a small city which was where the Imperial Brazilian family of the 19th century had their summer home. With its refreshing mountain climate and wonderful views, Petrópolis is 809 meters high and is only 53 miles from Rio. Attractions there include the Imperial Museum, once the summer palace of the Emperor, Don Pedro II, and still containing historical documents, jewels and artwork that belonged to the Imperial Family. This is a perfect daytime outing which even allows time for visitors to enjoy the gastronomic center called Itaipava and spend the night in one of the picturesque and comfortable local lodges.
