Rio offers a great variety of cultural options. For those who love art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, inaugurated in 1958, has in its collection more than 1700 works or art including paintings, sculptures, and engravings by renowned Brazilian and international artists.Designed by the well-known architect Oscar Niemeyer, MAC was built on the Mirante da Boa Viagem, in Niterói, a privileged location which overlooks the ocean and guides the visitor's eye to the other side of Guanabara Bay, toward Corcovado (where the Christ figure is) and Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).
The museum is considered to be an international tourist site. The Municipal Theater, an impressive building in the downtown area, is a real temple of culture. Its grandiose interior, with marble stairs, is the stage for renowned international artists who perform seasonal concerts, operas and dance.Rio also has the biggest and most complete collection of primitive art, found in the International Museum of Primitive Art. The Museum, which has a collection of more than 8.000 works by Brazilian painters and international artists from 130 countries, is only 50 meters from the train station that takes visitors to the statue of Christ.
